Catriel Efrony - urban megascapes?

Efroni is an Israeli artist, who lives and works in the artist’s community in Tzfat. A coworker of mine has some of his paintings replicated on her cubicle, which is how I learned about him.

Here is the strongest “megastructure” feel. It’s an abstract piece, but I interpret it very literally.

This circular aperture looks like something I would come across while wandering the megastructure.

This is less urban and more like a countryside overlooking the city. Not a very Megastructure piece.

Megastructure Spotting in Be'er Sheva

Yoni brought us some interesting photographs of a monument near Be’er Sheva (Southern Israel). There is a curious underground section, as pictured here:

This is still a nearly-mundane image. But let’s flip it upside down:

The light source from the bottom of the corridor suggests that we are perhaps in a maintenance duct, attached to a ceiling high above the floor.

However, the most compelling version is found by flipping the same image on its side:

Now the image of a space-station is conjured. We are walking along a ring-like passage, mysterious light coming from our left.

Now, we break the illusion by showing the sad reality of the outside of the complex:

Italian urban megastructure

Less than 10 kilometers from Rome, the shoestring “serpent” housing project called Corviale could be a kilometer-long spaghetti farm as seen from the air.

Never completed, never maintained. An excellent template for the future – it might simply be integrated into the growing Megastructure, just another tiny piece of the monolithic patchwork.

Breed - Generative Sculptures

Breed generates structures according to an evolutionary algorithm. These structures are then printed in 3D using rapid prototyping fabrication techniques, like printing stainless steel powder into the desired shapes, and then hardening them through a heating process.

Take a look at their metal sculptures. These machines are the builders of cellularized worlds, the compartmentalizing and materializing of the mathematical, algorithmic world into a habitat and workplace.

Digital Beijing

This breathtaking building stands proud outside the 2008 Olympic stadium. Calling to mind a retro-60’s circuit board, it invokes one of the landmarks that helped push us into this “digital” age. One can imagine transistors as large as VW Beetles crawling over it.

As nostalgic and emblematic of a past age the outsides are, however, the inner chambers reflect the true future of human digitalization:

In these expansive spaces, analog tendencies cease as we become polarized in our thoughts. Concepts fall into finite pigeonholes, we resign ourselves to the cells we are assigned, the paths we are allocated.

megastructure.org - updated again

As you can see, megastructure.org has been updated again, bringing it at least into the beginning of the 21st century. I’m sure there are a few more kinks to stomp out, but overall I’m pleased with the design. A number of bugs were fixed in the process, which should make megastructure.org more accessible and less frustrating.

If you are a photographer, you may be interested in the Exploring the Megastructure group on flickr. The pool is steadily growing in size, and contributions of real-life megastructure findings is greatly appreciated.

Also, a blog has been launched, in order to document separately the development of a computer-based Megastructure “experience”, the blueprints of which still haunt me.
